VTA’s new Caltrain tunnel makes it easier to get to Quakes games

Getting to a San Jose Earthquakes game should be more convenient — and safer — for fans from the South Bay to San Francisco.

The Valley Transportation Authority has completed construction of a $12 million pedestrian tunnel that will allow people to walk from the Santa Clara Caltrain station to Avaya Stadium in San Jose.

To celebrate the opening, Caltrain will offer free rides on a charter train from San Francisco for Saturday’s 4:45 p.m. match against the Colorado Rapids for any fans who have game tickets or are wearing Quakes gear. That train will leave San Francisco at 2:47 p.
