Second-half collapse costs Quakes at Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Winless in seven previous tries in Portland, the San Jose Earthquakes came up empty again Saturday night.

The 3-1 loss might have been the most frustrating yet. The Timbers were playing their third match in a week, five players were out with injuries and the defending MLS Cup Champions hadn't won since their season opener.None of that, however, seemed to matter. After dominating the first half, San Jose completely collapsed in the second, allowing all three Portland goals.Jack McInerney slid a ball past keeper David Bingham in the 52nd minute after the Earthquakes failed to clear and Fanendo Adi scored the game winner in the 65th with a shot to Bingham's right.
