San Jose Earthquakes lose but get goal from young star

Cade Cowell, 16, became the youngest player in team history to start and to score a goal but the San Jose Earthquakes fell to the Los Angeles Galaxy 3-2 in a Major League Soccer game Saturday night in Carson.

Cowell scored in the 59th minute to give the Quakes (2-2-2, 8 points) a 2-1 lead. But Cristian Pavon scored on a penalty kick and Sebastian Lletget got the game-winner off a poorly defended corner kick in the final 18 minutes. The Galaxy (2-3-2, 8 points) also scored in the first half off a free kick.

San Jose coach Matias Almeyda was not happy with his team’s defense of set pieces.
