SAN JOSE — The San Jose Earthquakes, who have made little noise this season, made big news Monday by naming Matias Almeyda their new coach.
Almeyda, 44, most recently was manager of Chivas Guadalajara.
Highly decorated as a player, he played for his homeland Argentina in two World Cups. He retired as a player in 2011 and has managed three international teams since then.
In San Jose, he will take charge of an operation not unlike the one he inherited in 2015. Chivas, a bad club then, has been wildly successful under Almeyda. What’s more, the man called El Pelado (bald one) despite his long hair, became a fan favorite.
