The Earthquakes continued to spiral downward Saturday after a 2-0 defeat to the Montreal Impact extended their winless streak to 10 games.
All-Star Ignacio Piatti had a goal and an assist for Montreal (9-12-0), which left San Jose (2-11-6) reeling.
A hint of the team’s fragile state unfolded on the sideline just as the second half started. Coach Michael Stahre and midfielder Fatai Alashe were shown on the television broadcast in a heated conversation after Alashe was taken out of the game.
Stahre sent in center back Jimmy Ockford because Alashe suffered a groin muscle strain, a team spokesperson said.
