KANSAS CITY, Kan. – The San Jose Earthquakes survived 90 minutes of regulation on Wednesday night, and then another 30 minutes of stoppage time, all while Sporting Kansas City attacked in waves.
All the Earthquakes had to advance to the first U.S. Open Cup final in club history was win a penalty kick shootout.
San Jose couldn’t do it. Victor Bernardez stepped to the spot in the sixth round, needing to convert to keep the match going, but his shot was stopped by Sporting KC keeper Tim Melia to give the home side a 1-1 (5-4) victory.
