VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Vako scored the lone goal for the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday in their 2-1 loss to the Vancouver Whitecaps at BC Place.
It was the second time in a week the Whitecaps topped the Quakes, who with the loss and other results were officially eliminated from postseason contention. The Quakes (4-15-8) are last in the Western Conference with just 20 points.
Alphonso Davies and Nicolas Mezquida scored for Vancouver, which needed the three points to stay in the postseason chase. The Whitecaps (40 points) ran their unbeaten streak to six matches.
Davies opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, scooping a pass from Yordy Reyna in the Quakes’ box and tapping it into the bottom left corner of the net.
