SAN JOSE – It may have taken a month, but the San Jose Earthquakes finally showed the promise of new coach Matias Almeyda’s free-flowing system.
The Quakes earned their first points of the season Saturday with a dominating 3-0 win over the Portland Timbers at Avaya Stadium.
Danny Hoesen and Cristian Espinoza set a club record for shortest time between goals by scoring 70 seconds apart in the first half, while Shea Salinas opened the scoring in the 15th minute with his 14th goal in 287 career games.
The Quakes (1-4-0) led 3-0 before Portland (0-4-1), the reigning Western Conference champions, even recorded a shot on target, and scored three times in a half for the first time since 2015 at Sporting Kansas City.
