SAN JOSE — Valeri Qazaishvili came to the Earthquakes this summer as the centerpiece of the team’s new direction.
Many wondered why the designated player from the Republic of Georgia was left on the bench Wednesday in a dismal showing that put San Jose’s playoff hopes in jeopardy.
But everything changed Saturday night when the Quakes needed it the most. Qazaishvili, known as “Vako” enjoyed his best game in a San Jose uniform as the Earthquakes held off total collapse with an inspiring 2-1 victory over the Portland Timbers.
Sixth-place San Jose (12-14-6, 42 points) moved into the final playoff spot in the Western Conference with two games to play.
