Ex-Earthquakes coach Kinnear hired by rivals in Los Angeles

Ex-Earthquakes coach Dominic Kinnear has returned to Major League Soccer two months after San Jose let him go: He has joined the staff of the rival Los Angeles Galaxy.

One of the league’s most respected head coaches with two MLS Cup titles, Kinnear becomes Sigi Schmid’s chief assistant, the Galaxy announced Tuesday.

The Quakes sacked Kinnear, 50, midway through his third year in San Jose although the team was in playoff position. He is third in victories (166) on the MLS all-time coaching list but Earthquakes management wanted to shift its direction in what general manager Jesse Fioranelli called a “gut decision.
