Earthquakes send midfielder to Houston ahead of MLS draft

SAN JOSE — In a move that signals increased roles for certain players, the Earthquakes traded central midfielder Darwin Ceren to the Houston Dynamo for up to $225,000, the team announced Friday ahead of the MSL draft.

After signing Yeferson Quintana this week, the Quakes completed their backline, thus freeing Florian Jungwirth to move to his natural center midfield position. With second-year player Jackson Yueill expected to get more time in the central midfield as well, Darwin, 28, became expendable.

San Jose took French defender Paul Marie of Florida International with the 12th overall pick Friday. The Quakes have four more draft picks.
