SAN JOSE — You could hear a pin drop at Avaya Stadium when Nicolas Mezquida tapped in an easy goal from the center of the box in the 17th minute to put Vancouver ahead 2-0.
But the Earthquakes showed grit. They showed resilience.
San Jose climbed out of the 2-0 hole Saturday night and responded with three unanswered goals to remain unbeaten in the young MLS season with a 3-2 victory over Vancouver Whitecaps FC in front of a sellout crowd of 18,000 at Avaya Stadium.
The tide turned in the 23rd minute when Vancouver goalkeeper David Ousted was issued a red card after taking out Chris Wondolowski, who had a clear path to the goal, just outside the box.
