SAN JOSE — Matheus Silva has returned to practice with Earthquakes affiliate Reno 1868s FC after a near-drowning incident at South Lake Tahoe.
The development has been a relief for the organization after the midfielder spent two days in a coma before awakening and starting his recovery from a July 4 incident.
“Every game is for him,” Reno defender Thomas Janjigian said. “It’s how it should be.”
Reno coach Ian Russell said Silva, 20, wanted to return to the field “ever since he was in the hospital.” The Earthquakes have not released an update on Silva’s condition and whether he will be able to return full-time to soccer.
