Earthquakes lose key defender for Philadelphia Union game

SAN JOSE -- The Earthquakes suffered a big loss Wednesday when Major League Soccer's disciplinary committee suspended defender Andres Imperiale for the weekend game at Philadelphia.

Imperiale, 29 had started six consecutive games in place of ailing Clarence Goodson, but will have to sit Saturday against the Union (4-3-0).The loss leaves coach Dominic Kinnear with limited choices for the central defense. He probably will slide outside back Marvell Wynne into the center and play newcomer Kofi Sarkodie on the right side of the back line. The other option is to start Brazilian teenager Matheus Silva. The team has not announced a timetable for Goodson's return.
