SAN JOSE — When Chris Wondolowski gets on a roll, few defenses can stop him.
At least not the Los Angeles Galaxy.
The Earthquakes captain scored twice Monday night as San Jose routed the deflated Galaxy 3-2 in a sterling U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal game at Avaya Stadium in front of a vocal crowd of 14,560 fans.
Wondolowski, 34, tied Ronald Cerritos with four career Open Cup goals for the most in Quakes’ history.
The effort put San Jose in the semifinals of the Open Cup for the only time other than 2004.
The Quakes will face the winner of Tuesday’s FC Dallas-Sporting Kansas City game next month.
