SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. >> Dereck Rodriguez almost acted like a pain killer for the Giants last year after getting called up in late May last year, providing the ailing team with a desperately needed dose of starting pitching.
While most of the staff struggled through injuries and inconsistency, the rookie right-hander delivered a 6-4 record and 2.81 earned-runs average, best among the team’s starters. Every fifth day, he was usually giving San Francisco temporary relief from an otherwise disappointing season.
Even after his breakthrough in 2018 though, Rodriguez is no lock to be on the Giants’ opening-day roster this season.
