The White House announced Monday that both Yogi Berra and Willie Mays will be among the recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
The Medal of Freedom is considered the highest civilian award of the United States, and is awarded to individuals who have made "an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors".
The White House's description of Berra praises him not only for his contributions on the baseball field, but also for his military service and role as an ambassador for inclusion in sports.
