SAN FRANCISCO -- Despite performing capably in a part-time role, Giants infielder Ramiro Pena was designated for assignment Saturday to create a vacancy on the 25-man roster for outfielder Hunter Pence, who was activated from the disabled list and installed in San Francisco's lineup.
Pena hit .299 (26-for-87) in 30 games after the Giants purchased his contract from Triple-A Sacramento on June 10. However, second baseman Joe Panik's return from the disabled list and Thursday's acquisition of infielder Eduardo Nunez from Minnesota squeezed Pena out of San Francisco's roster picture.
