SAN FRANCISCO — All that Derek Jeter nostalgia over the weekend had special meaning for Christian Arroyo. Though the Giants rookie infielder grew up in Florida, he admired Jeter from afar, and not just for the 3,464 career hits.
“It was more for what he did off the field,” Arroyo, 21, said. “He was just a natural-born leader. He was just one of those guys that I always looked up to for how he handled himself, especially because he was in the limelight.”
The New York Yankees retired Jeter’s number on Sunday, and a few days earlier Arroyo tweeted a highlight clip of the shortstop, adding: “I got chills.
