SAN FRANCISCO–At a public celebration of life for Willie McCovey last week, his closest teammates revealed their admiration not just for the way the Hall of Fame first baseman carried himself on the field, but how he handled himself off of it.
“What he did on the field, everybody knows,” fellow Hall of Famer Orlando Cepeda said. “But as a human being, Willie McCovey was very special. He was very quiet, he didn’t say much, but he had a big heart.”
In a ceremony held at AT&T Park, McCovey was remembered for his love of family, friends and the game of baseball.
