The new HBO documentary “Say Hey, Willie Mays!” is a masterpiece, giving us a captivating look at the life of arguably the greatest baseball player of all time. From his early days in Birmingham, Alabama, through his time with the San Francisco Giants, both as a player and as an ambassador, the documentary uses interviews and archival footage to show all sides of Mays, on the field and off. It’s an excellent production from start to finish.
While I was watching the film, however, I was struck by a thought: Since the Giants arrived in 1958, they’ve had a nearly unbroken line of superstar players.
