SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.–It’s been less than a calendar year since Giants’ prospect Chris Shaw received some of the most surprising news of his baseball career.
The Giants were preparing to break camp in Scottsdale, Arizona, and Shaw was still taking groundballs with the first baseman’s mitt he thought he’d take to Double-A Richmond.
After a full spring as an infielder, Shaw didn’t need that mitt.
“The first time they told me I was going to play outfield was the last week of spring training last year,” Shaw said. “There was like five days left in camp and it was, ‘Hey, by the way, you’re going to play left this year.
