Every year around this time, each team in baseball releases a handful of prospects. It’s just the nature of the game. The domestic reserve limit keeps teams from hoarding players, and space is needed for Minor League signings, as well as for the additions of all the recent draftees who didn’t yet debut.
The San Francisco Giants are part of this churn. And since there’s no news with the Major League team — we’re still waiting to see what player will be released to clear space on the 40-man roster for Hall of Fame-bound pitcher Justin Verlander (assuming he passes his physical) — the Minor League releases are all we have.
