Tributes quickly poured in on social media from around the sports world and greater San Francisco community after news that Giants legend Willie Mays, who many believe was the greatest baseball player in the history of the game, died on Tuesday. He was 93.
The Giants announced that Mays passed away peacefully on Tuesday afternoon, with the news coming during the middle of the team’s game on Tuesday night. The team said it will hold a public celebration of his life, but details would be announced at a later date.
Mays was a 24-time All-Star, a two-time MVP and a one-time World Series champion.
