MENLO PARK -- Renel Brooks-Moon had no idea she was a role model until a youngster told her so.
Brooks-Moon, the public address announcer for the San Francisco Giants since 2000, said she was caught by surprise early in her broadcasting career when a girl invited her to speak at her middle school's career day. Then it happened again -- and again."She made me realize I am, in fact, a role model and I have a huge responsibility to fill that role," Brooks-Moon told The Daily News on Tuesday. Brooks-Moon, who will receive the Role Model Award from Menlo Park-based nonprofit JobTrain at its 32nd annual Breakfast of Champions fundraiser on June 3, said she didn't realize the trail she was blazing as one of the few African-American -- let alone female -- voices over the airwaves when she began in the mid-1980s.
