The SF Giants seem to be casting their longtime top prospect aside

Ever since he signed with the San Francisco Giants as a 16-year-old prospect six years ago, Marco Luciano has been hailed as the franchise’s shortstop of the future. The organization was seemingly set to make him the shortstop of the present heading into this season.

But with the trade deadline less than three weeks away, the Giants may be setting themselves up to move on from Luciano in their long-term plans at the pivotal infield position.

The Giants made their biggest statement of the season about Luciano on Tuesday by cutting veteran shortstop Nick Ahmed, a veteran the Giants signed and took to the MLB roster to give Luciano more time to get comfortable at the position before playing full time in the majors.
