We’re barely into March, but the San Francisco Giants’ plan to trust their young pitchers to get them through the beginning of the season is already falling apart.
Extremely tall pitcher Sean Hjelle sprained his elbow recently, the Giants announced Tuesday, sidelining the 6-foot-11 right-hander for a couple of weeks. Hjelle was mainly considered to be gunning for a bullpen spot, but had been slotted in as the team’s potential fifth starter after some other pitchers picked up injuries in spring training.
Hjelle’s isn’t as serious as Tristan Beck’s, who underwent successful vascular surgery Monday to remove an aneurysm in his upper right arm.
