SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.–The Giants’ starters were on their way home by mid-afternoon on Sunday, but the players competing for jobs nearly stayed until sunset.
After all the regulars subbed out in the middle innings, Giants’ bench coach Hensley Meulens tabbed several prospects to finish out the club’s matinee against the Cubs.
It made for a long afternoon.
As Chicago bested San Francisco 12-10 in the Giants’ third Cactus League game of the spring, a handful of prospects took advantage of an opportunity to leave an impression on the coaching staff.
Though Sunday’s three hour and 59-minute affair served as a reminder of why Major League Baseball is concerned about the pace of play, center field prospect Steven Duggar made every second count.
