Around the Bay Area and beyond, social media users paused to pay their respects to San Francisco Giants legend and major-league baseball Hall of Famer Willie McCovey, who died Wednesday at age 80.
In a tweet from the Giants’ Twitter account, the team shared the sad news and put out the #Forever44 hashtag. Franchise fans from the famous to the not-so-famous followed along with more than a few memories of the man known as “Stretch.”
It is with great sadness that we announce that San Francisco Giants Legend and Hall of Famer Willie McCovey passed away peacefully this afternoon at the age of 80 after losing his battle with ongoing health issues.
