I have been fortunate to cover some great closers in my day, in both personality and performance: Steve Bedrosian, Rod Beck, Jeff Brantley, Dennis Eckersley, Robb Nen, Brian Wilson, Sergio Romo and . . .
OK, we’ll put Armando Benitez in another category.
All but Eckersley had one thing in common. When they entered a game, fans chewed off their fingernails and bemoaned how scary their ninth innings were.
Which brings us to Santiago Casilla, who got his 100th career save (96th with the Giants) in Monday night’s 5-4 victory against the Padres.
