Among the more wholesome joys in sports are the consistently creative mascots that dot minor league baseball — the Rumble Ponies and Jumbo Shrimp and Space Cowboys of the world. One San Francisco Giants minor league affiliate team, however, just showed why there sometimes needs to be constraints on creativity.
The whole thing started for the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats on April Fools’ Day, as so many bad ideas do. That day, the team posted a notice on Instagram that said workers preparing the field for the upcoming season had “struck gold.”
“We had planned to release more details at a later date, but the story was unearthed today when a River Cats staffer was seen cashing in his share of the treasure,” the team wrote.
