In a move to make room on the 40-man roster, the San Francisco Giants have designated infielder Tommy La Stella for assignment. La Stella has been battling injuries and hasn’t lived up to his 3-year, $18.75 million ($2MM in 2021, $5.25MM in 2022, and $11.5 million in 2023) contract. His contract is backloaded, so even though the Giants owe him $11.5 million, they still feel ready to move on.
La Stella has been struck hard by the injury bug while with the Giants. He’s had two Achilles tendon surgeries and the Giants seem like they’re ready to move forward with Thairo Estrada getting the bulk of the playing time at 2nd base.
