The San Francisco Giants will no longer implement a plan to replace fans' memorial tiles with a digital display after outrage quickly tore through the community.
The Chronicle's John Shea broke the story Friday that the Giants intended to permanently remove fans' tiles around McCovey Cove. (SFGATE and the San Francisco Chronicle are both owned by Hearst but have separate newsrooms.) Instead of relocating them, as stadiums often do in such cases, Shea reported that the Giants were going to replace them with a "digital kiosk." This, unsurprisingly, was terrible news for people who paid for the tiles, especially those who inscribed theirs with commemorations for deceased loved ones.
