SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco Giants envisioned Hunter Pence hitting in the middle of their lineup against left-handed pitchers and providing the team with a much-needed source of power during the 2020 season.
Those plans never came to fruition.
The club announced Sunday that Pence has been designated for assignment after the Giants acquired infielder Daniel Robertson from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for cash considerations.
The 37-year-old Pence went 5-for-52 with two home runs for the Giants this season and never lived up to the team’s expectations following a 2019 All-Star campaign in Texas with the Rangers.
