SAN FRANCISCO–The Giants entered the year hoping Mac Williamson would force his way onto the Opening Day roster and win the a job in the team’s inexperienced outfield.
After a rough spring at the plate, Williamson was instead designated for assignment, but that doesn’t mean his career with the Giants is over. The 28-year-old outfielder has reportedly cleared waivers and will be outrighted to Triple-A Sacramento, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
The Giants chose to keep Rule 5 draft choice Connor Joe and utility outfielder Michael Reed instead of Williamson on their 25-man roster as president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi explained the club preferred the versatility Joe and Reed provided.
