The Giants and A’s have used the trade deadline to assemble final pieces of championship seasons.
In some cases, deadline moves backfired, some much more than others.
Here are our top 10 trade seasons in the Bay Area since 1986, the year the deadline was pushed back to July 31:
10. 1998 Giants (Ellis Burks, Jose Mesa, Shawon Dunston, Joe Carter): Depth was added in a season that abruptly ended with Carter’s popup at Wrigley Field in a one-game tiebreaker. Burks, who arrived from Colorado, stuck around to usher in the Giants’ new ballpark in 2000, but Mesa and Dunston (from Cleveland) and Carter (Baltimore) were rentals, though Dunston returned to play on the 2002 World Series team.
