Plenty of recognizable names, intrigue among Giants’ non-roster invitees

A former National League MVP and a hulking, heroic figure from the Giants’ 2014 postseason run are among the club’s 28 minor league signees who received non-roster invitations to major league camp this spring.

Former Phillies infielder Jimmy Rollins, who grew up in Alameda, will seek to make the Giants as a backup to shortstop Brandon Crawford. The 38-year-old and 2007 NL MVP has one fewer player to beat out, after the Giants designated infielder Ehire Adrianza for assignment last week and the Milwaukee Brewers plucked him off waivers.

Power hitter Michael Morse, whose tying, pinch home run off the Cardinals’ Pat Neshek proved critical in their pennant-clinching victory in 2014, also is back with the club after being released by the Pittsburgh Pirates a couple weeks into last season.
