Phillies’ 5-run 8th dooms Giants as new reliever takes loss

PHILADELPHIA - Madison Bumgarner allowed eight runs in 5 1/3 innings. The Giants erased a six-run lead in the span of 11 hitters. Home-plate umpire Bob Davidson ejected a fan sitting behind the Giants dugout for apparently yelling homophobic slurs.

The score of the night Tuesday was 13-8 Phillies. They scored five runs in the eighth against new Giants reliever Will Smith and Sergio Romo to break a tie and take the opener of a three-game series at Citizens Bank Park.

Aaron Altherr chopped a two-run single through the middle against Romo to score the runners Smith put on before Cameron Rupp hit a three-run homer to stop any thoughts of a ninth-inning Giants comeback.
