The Giants hired a bullpen coach on Thursday, a sign they’ll be more analytic-driven in 2018.
Part of Matt Herges’ responsibilities include “series advance analysis,” so he’ll need to be just as familiar with a laptop and smart phone as he is with a bullpen mound and bucket of balls.
Herges, 47, pitched 11 years in the majors including three with the Giants and worked in the Dodgers’ farm system for seven seasons, the past two as Triple-A pitching coach. It’s no secret how much the pennant-winning Dodgers favor analytics.
The Giants announced the Herges hiring on Thursday and made official their plans to move Hensley Meulens from hitting coach to bench coach and Ron Wotus from bench coach to first-base coach.
