It was announced yesterday that Peter Magowan, former managing general partner of the San Francisco Giants, passed away after a lengthy battle with cancer. Magowan was as responsible for my Giants fandom as my father, though I didn’t realize it until much later. And I am grateful for all that he helped the organization achieve during his tenure and saddened by the news of his death.
We moved back to California in the early 1990’s, which coincided with the uncertainty about whether the Giants would stay in San Francisco. Magowan not only helped keep the team in San Francisco, ensuring there was still a team to root for, but he signed off on the blockbuster deal that brought Barry Bonds to the Bay.
