The Giants have agreed on a deal that will send right fielder Andrew McCutchen to the Yankees, MLB.com's Jon Paul Morosi has confirmed. ESPN's Buster Olney was the first to report the deal, and according to multiple reports, the return to San Francisco will be two Minor League prospects, including infielder Abiatal Avelino, New York's No. 23 prospect according to MLB Pipeline.
McCutchen, 31, hit .255/.357/.415 with 15 home runs for the Giants this season, his first with San Francisco after the Pirates traded him in January.
While the Giants had an eye toward returning to the postseason in 2018 following a 98-loss campaign in 2017, the club entered Thursday seven games back in the National League West, and eight games back in the NL Wild Card standings, making a deal to send the five-time All-Star and 2013 NL Most Valuable Player elsewhere before Friday's waiver trade deadline a viable option.
