Matt Cain, the longest tenured Giant, embraces spring battle: “Let’s all compete for it”

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Matt Cain traveled the show horse circuit this winter. He sat in the metal bleachers and cheered for his wife, Chelsea, an accomplished equestrian.

He did not mind being on the sidelines. He chuckled that he rather enjoyed the novelty of it. But he is not ready for permanent residence there.

For the 12th consecutive year, Cain was among the Giants pitchers and catchers who reported to Scottsdale Stadium on Monday. The only uniformed personnel who have been here longer are Cain’s pitching coaches, Dave Righetti and Mark Gardner, and bench coach Ron Wotus.
