Mark Melancon gives up walk-off home run, Aramís García records four hits in loss

ST. LOUIS–As the season winds down, the book on the 2018 Giants is almost ready for publication.

Some of the chapters focus heavily on injuries and others on the team’s offensive failures, but the most rewarding part for readers might be the lines written about rookie starter Dereck Rodríguez.

In a year that’s destined to end in forgettable fashion, even one of Rodríguez’s worst days proved why his emergence was so remarkable.

In the midst of the Giants’ 5-4 walkoff loss to the Cardinals, Rodríguez allowed four earned runs for the first time since June 9, snapping a 16-game streak that included 15 starts in which the right-hander held opponents to three runs or fewer.
