SAN FRANCISCO–Shortly after civil rights activist Dr. Harry Edwards and civil rights lawyer John Burris called for a “total boycott” of the San Francisco Giants, team CEO Larry Baer released a statement that the franchise will not seek to control who its owners support politically.
The call for a boycott came after public election filings revealed one of the team’s owners, Charles Johnson, donated the maximum $2,700 to the campaign of Cindy Hyde-Smith, a Republican U.S. Senator from Mississippi who has expressed racist remarks.
Johnson is one of more than 30 Giants owners, but is believed to hold the largest stake in the club.
