Julian Fernández’s UCL sprain has Giants fearing the worst

SAN FRANCISCO–Julian Fernández’s right arm was always going to force the Giants to make a tough decision.

They just though the decision would be a different one.

Prior to the final exhibition game of the spring Tuesday, manager Bruce Bochy revealed Fernández has been diagnosed with a UCL sprain in his pitching arm and will start the season on the disabled list.

Fernández was selected in the Rule 5 draft during the offseason, meaning the Giants either had to keep him on their 25-man roster for the entirety of the regular season or offer him back to his last franchise, the Colorado Rockies.
