How the Giants arrived at an unconventional Opening Day roster

SAN FRANCISCO–To say these aren’t your father’s San Francisco Giants would be the understatement of the year.

Some of the players aren’t your toddler’s San Francisco Giants, either.

When the club takes the field in San Diego on Thursday, three members of the team will have been acquired within a week of first pitch and one-fifth of the 25-man roster will be experiencing its first Opening Day in the major leagues.

There are two Rule 5 draft picks with no MLB service time and only one outfielder with more than 150 career at-bats, yet there are three starting pitchers who have spent a combined three decades at the sport’s highest level.
