How Hunter Strickland balances on-field demeanor with off-the-field perception

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.–Shortly after the Giants hired bullpen coach Matt Herges, the new assistant said one Giants’ reliever topped his list of the players he couldn’t wait to work with.

It wasn’t three-time All-Star closer Mark Melancon. It wasn’t the former closer on the staff who throws 98 miles per hour with sink, Sam Dyson. Instead, Herges chose Hunter Strickland.

Why? Herges said Strickland looks like he wants to “rip your face off.”

“That’s cool, I didn’t know he said that, that’s funny to hear,” Strickland said. “But I think that goes back to competing, that’s ultimately what we’re out there doing.
