SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants identified a key piece to bolster their bullpen, if not a true impact reliever. And they paid a steep price for it just prior to Monday's non-waiver trade deadline
The Giants acquired left-hander Will Smith from the Milwaukee Brewers for Triple-A catcher Andrew Susac and right-hander Phil Bickford, the latter of whom was their top pick in the 2015 draft.Smith, 27, was 1-3 with a 3.68 ERA in 27 games for the Brewers and struck out 22 batters in 22 innings. He's a fly ball pitcher who figures to benefit from a move to AT&T Park, and although his matchup numbers are fairly even over his career, he's pitching to a reverse split this season; left-handers are batting .
