SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Jimmy Rollins has played 19,514 defensive innings in 17 big-league seasons, all at shortstop, except for one third of an inning in a 2002 game against the Dodgers in Philadelphia.
Rollins, who is expected to start at second base when the Giants host the White Sox on Thursday, remembers the painful memory.
With two outs in the eighth inning, Dodgers reliever Giovanni Carrara drilled Rollins on his right funny bone. The inning ended before he regained feeling in his arm. He was in so much pain, when he took the field for the top of the ninth he made a battlefield decision to switch positions with second baseman Tomas Perez.
