Giants take Vanderbilt outfielder with 1st pick

The Giants surrendered their first-round selection (26th overall) to the White Sox as compensation for signing right-hander Jeff Samardzija, a free agent last offseason. San Francisco hadn't lost a first-round pick since 2005, when signing free agents Armando Benitez, Mike Matheny and Omar Vizquel cost the team its picks in the first three rounds.

Since then, a handful of second-round choices have ascended to the Majors with San Francisco, including a current Giant, outfielder Jarrett Parker. Others include catcher Andrew Susac, outfielders Nate Schierholtz and Fred Lewis, first baseman Lance Niekro, right-hander Jesse Foppert and left-hander Jack Taschner.
